and defense in times of greatest difficulty and imminent danger, evidenced in the remarkable deliverance of Robert Barrow, with divers other persons, from the devouring waves of the sea, amongst which they suffered shipwreck; and also from the cruel devouring jaws of the inhuman cannibals of Florida. Faithfully related by one of the persons concerned therein, Jonathan Dickenson. The seventh edition. London, J. Phillips, 1790, 136 p., loose bookblock in later wrapper, small 8vo.
Tanned/ stained at beginning and end, else in good condition. The wrapper with blind stamp (with place name Lyme Regis) of John Fowles (1926-2005), English novelist and essayist. In 1974, Fowles' 46-page text Shipwreck appeared; clearly a theme that resonated with the author. The famous shipwreck from the present work took place in 1696, the first edition appeared in 1699. The work is mostly important for its descriptions of American Indians and is considered one of the best "captivity tracts". With 1 other London edition (Cymbalum mundi: or Satyrical dialogues on various subjects, 1723). (total 2)
