Two Modernist Folk Art Works

Two small-scale modernist works of art featuring regional folk themes. The first is a square glazed ceramic tile depicting a woman in profile wearing a traditional white headdress and patterned garment against a vibrant blue ground. The tile is mounted to a black wood block support. The verso is inscribed YUGOSLAVIA 78 and signed. The second is a mixed media painting. It depicts a whimsical village scene with numerous spired churches and colorful buildings in an arched composition, reminiscent of Romanian Orthodox architecture. The work is signed in the lower right corner and is set within a blue mat and an ornate silver-toned metal frame with a repeating geometric and beaded design. Both pieces include circular labels for the Rubin Collection on their versos. Dimensions: 5.25"L x 1.00"W x 7.50"H
