Two Part John Pine Book of Tapestries
The procession and ceremonies observed at the time of the installation of the Knights Companions of the most Honourable Military Order of the Bath. [AND] The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords, representing the several Engagements between the English and Spanish Fleets in the memorable year MDLXXXVIII. PINE, John (1690–1756).
Folio (20 1/4 x 14 1/4), two works bound in one volume. Half calf with marble boards (very rubbed, reback to style), spine gilt in 8 compartments with 7 raised bands. Provenance: With the engraved armorial book plate of Eric Sexton - FSA, crowned armorial bookplate with motto 'Honi Soit qui Mal Y Pense', engraved name plate of John Hely-Hutchinson (1947), 7th Earl of Donoughmore on the front paste-down. The procession and ceremonies observed at the time of the installation of the Knights Companions of the most Honourable Military Order of the Bath. London: Printed S. Palmer and J. Huggonson for John Pine, 1730. Engraved title-pages in French and English printed in red and black, each with an engraved vignette, parallel text in French and English, list of subscribers. 20 engraved plates, all but one double-page, 10 engraved head- and tail-pieces by Pine after J. Highmore. In 1725 John Pine asked Joseph Highmore to make 20 drawings for engravings of The Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath. The formal ceremony celebrating the installation of knights conferred by the King was held at Westminster Abbey on 17 June 1725. The text of this work, written by John Anstis, describes the procession to the chapel by the knights, the ceremony at the chapel, and the banquet served after the ceremonies. The plates illustrate the participants of the procession, the attire of the knights, and the seating chart and "plan of the entertainment" at the supper [AND] The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords, representing the several Engagements between the English and Spanish Fleets in the memorable year MDLXXXVIII. Engraved title-page, printed dedication, 2-page list of Subscribers, 24 pages of text, 5 double-page engraved charts, double-page map, and 10 double-page engraved views with center-pieces printed in green, all within decorative borders after Lempriere and Gravelot. First edition of Pine's celebrated work depicting the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, were " perhaps inspired by the success of Picart's publication in 1714 of Charles Le Brun's Meleager tapestries.
