Two Similar Gothic Carved Stall Chairs

Probably 15th/16th century with restorations, one oak throughout, with removable pierced crest over two relief carved Gothic window panels, otherwise set with eight linenfold panels, box base with hinged seat and iron lock with dragon hasp, 78-1/2 x 31 x 22 in.; one walnut, with pierced central crest in oak, over two tall linenfold panels, box base with hinged seat over a double linenfold panel support, 81 x 28-1/2 x 19 in.Note: Accompanied by a May 14, 1963 appraisal by Leopold Blumka of Blumka Gallery in New York, "Gothic Stall Chair with linenfold carving and old iron lock, French, 15th century... $1800.00" likely referring to the oak example. - Provenance: one back with old red accession number 07.225.519.GGL; Estate of Paul W. Condition Report: oak example losses at top of crest (crest is removable and likely an old replacement), cracks and infill at seat, other surface wear and distress especially at arm tops, other possible repairs and restorations; walnut example pest damage throughout with associated losses, discoloration, old losses at top of finials, rebuilding to box base with spliced legs, replaced seat and other restorations, old accession number on back
