Two Zodiac Funerary Jar
Unglazed Song Dynasty funerary jars each display under the rim the 'Four Mythological Symbols’ (??) - the Dragon, the Bird (often phoenix, the Tiger, and the Tortoise. Under this are wonderfully molded in relief are 12 figures each with a head referencing one animal of the zodiac. Buddhist iconography is also present with incised lotus petals below the figures around the vessel base, and the modeled finials which may be in the form of a stupa or spire. These offer an important example of the blending of two belief systems during this early period of Chinese culture.
