Two copies of a same charter issued by Walter of Marvis, bishop of Tournai.

Description: 2 ff. (26 x 19,5 cm): on vellum, in Latin, with ogival pendant seal (toned, seals sl. damaged). - Deed of assignment by Walter of Marvis (ca. 1175-1251) to the Cistercian Baudelo Abbey, Ghent, of two-thirds of tithes (tienden) of Waasland on condition that part of the funds were transferred to the priests of the parishes that would be erected there. This donation was later approved by popes Gregorius IX in 1238 and Innocent IV in 1248, before being revoked in front of the bishop of Laon in 1250 (Miraeus-Foppens). - The modern diocese of Ghent was at that time under the jurisdiction of the bishop of Tournai. Originally, Baudelo Abbey is a Benedictine priory founded in 1197 by Bauduin de Bovele, monk of Saint Peter's Abbey, Ghent. The former Baudelo Abbey is now occupied by the city library and the Royal Athenaeum of Ghent. Proposing two copies of the same 13th-c. charter is rare on the auction market. - Ref.
