* Two-handled silver cup inscribed 'Butlin's Skegness Carnival 1937...', with foliate scroll handles and circular base. Birmingham, 1897. Maker Elkington & Co. (2,150 g; h. 41 cm) (defects) The cup was awarded at the 1937 Butlin's Skegness Carnival, an event held at the celebrated holiday camp at Skegness, inaugurated by Billy (W.E.) Butlin in 1936 and destined to revolutionise British mass tourism. Among the highlights of the programme were beauty contests, parades and entertainments, often organised in collaboration with leading regional newspapers to promote the resort and attract visitors from across the United Kingdom. In this context, the cup was presented, under the patronage of the Yorkshire Telegraph and Star, to Miss Ruby Gray, who was crowned "Miss Yorkshire" during the 1937 carnival. The event constitutes a significant testament to the culture of leisure and the promotional strategies that contributed to the rapid success of Butlin's holiday camps in the years preceding the Second World War
