Two illuminated Qur’an sections (juz’ 19 and juz’ 23), China, 18th century or later, text: [juz’19] surah al-Furqan v.21 to surah al-Nami (27) v.59; [juz’ 23] surah Ya-Sin (36) v.28 to surah al-Zumar (39), v.31, Arabic manuscript on paper, with 5 lines to the pages written in black sini, ruled in red, verses separated by gold rosettes, opening bifolium decorated with gold and polychrome, the decoration at the end unfinished, in brown leather binding with stamped calligraphic medallions, folio 30 x 22cm. (2) Footnote: The illumination of this set is nearly identical to a juz’ sold at Christie’s, 11 April 2014, lot 338, supporting the hypothesis that these were produced in large quantities and so the illumination is not unique to each set.
