Two legal works from the second printer at Strasbourg
Heinrich Eggestein, c.1470 and 1472
CLEMENS V, Pope (formerly Raimundus Bertrandi del Goth, 1305-1314). Constitutiones. [Strasbourg: Heinrich Eggestein, about 1470, ante 21 November 1471.] [Bound with:] OBERTUS DE HORTO (fl. 12th century). Libri feudorum. Strasbourg: Heinrich Eggestein, 15 September 1472.

Two legal works from the second printer at Strasbourg, in a contemporary binding. The first work contains the Clementines, the decretals forming the final part of the Corpus juris canonici (and including the important bulla on the poverty of the Franciscans). It is of uncertain priority with the dated edition from the same printer. The second work is the first edition of a summary of the feudal system of Lombardy, and features an unusual example of a full colophon from Eggestein. The binding is lined with a 1444 document on vellum by Johannes de Reve, addressed to the deacon of the church at Strasbourg and concerning the clergy of the church. HC(Add) 5407*, H 9491* (II); GW 7079, 7774; BMC I 67, 69; BSB-Ink C-429, L-152; Bod-inc C-361; Goff C-712, J-601; ISTC ic00712000, ij00601000.

Royal folio (400 x 288mm). First work: 75 leaves (of 76, without initial blank); second work: 38 leaves (of 39, without guide to rubricators present in some copies). Colophon of second work printed in red. Red and blue ink pen-flourished initials, smaller red and blue initials, red paragraph marks (edges chipped and frayed, especially of first gathering, with dampstaining). Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over pasteboards, vellum manuscript pastedowns (lacking clasps, restored, with worming). Provenance: 17th-century inscription effaced on first leaf – acquired from Bernard M. Rosenthal, New York, 1 November, 1964.
