Archive

Two vice presidential letters, including: one letter signed with an autograph endorsement by Schuyler Colfax (1823-1885), future 17th U.S. President during Grant's first term; and one autograph letter signed by sitting 18th U.S. Vice President Henry Wilson (1812-1875), who served under Grant from 1873 until his death in 1875. May 26, 1868; September 15, 1873. Washington, D.C. and Natick, Massachusetts. Individual condition issues will be elaborated below, but is overall very good. The largest item, the Wilson ALS, is 7.75" x 9.75". Comes with a black and white portrait photograph of Wilson, stamped verso, 8.125" x 10"; along with the former collector's research printouts. From The Doug Wertman Collection.

Both Colfax and Wilson must have been contacted by an autograph or curiosity seeker, since their responses treat such topics such as the correct pronunciation of their name, or the tenure of their political career.

The lot includes:

1. A 1p letter signed by Schuyler Colfax, future 17th U.S. Vice President, then a U.S. Congressman from Indiana and Speaker of the House, as "Schuyler Colfax" near center right, with an additional 26-word autograph endorsement, after the signature, as: "My first name pronounced as if written Skyler + last as if written Coalfax, the a doubtless having dropped out crossing the Ocean." May 26, 1868. [Washington, D.C.] Secretarially inscribed on a leaf of "Fortieth Congress, U.S. / House of Representatives" stationery, once bifold, but now neatly sheared along the left edge. Flattened transmittal folds, else near fine. 5" x 7.875".

2. A 1p autograph letter signed by Henry Wilson, then sitting 18th U.S. President and former U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, as "Henry Wilson" near center right. September 15, 1873. Natick, Massachusetts. Inscribed on bifold paper. Blank inner pages and outer leaf. Flattened transmittal folds. Isolated scuffs, else near fine. Lightly pencil-inscribed by a former collector on the outer leaf. 7.75" x 9.75".

Wilson wrote in part:

"In response to your request I have to say that I was elected to the Senate of the United States in January 1855 to fill a vacancy of five years and about one month. I was reelected in the years 1859 - 1865 - 1871 - in all twenty two years and one month…"
