ULYSSES S. GRANT
(1822 - 1885) Eighteenth President of the United States and Union lieutenant general. Rare, attractive partly-printed D.S., 1p. 12.5 x 15.5, Galena, Aug. 28, 1865, an unengrossed membership certificate issued by the Soldiers Monument Association intended for a member of the 'Jo Daviess Soldiers' Monument Association', signed at the bottom by Grant as president of the association. The document has five attractive vignettes: Abraham Lincoln with an eagle and flags at top, Liberty, a Union soldier, and miners. A few tiny tears at top, lightly toned, else very good. The monument, named after the county, is a tall obelisk with circular tablets cut in high relief on each face and is located in Grant Park in Galena. The reliefs depict General Grant, General Rawlins, the American Shield, and a soldier's cap resting on a pair of crossed bayonets.
