UNION TO THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA & WASHINGTON IN GLORY LIVERPOOL JUG.

[ translate ]

11" tall. Impressive Liverpool jug w/multiple transfers & maroon ornament. Pastural scene under spout flanked by two significant transfers: "Washington in Glory, America in Tears", memorial scene in reverance for the fallen President & "Union to the People of America" features three colonial figures rallying around a pole w/a "Liberty" cap atop and additional text below "Civil And Religious Liberty To All Mankind". While the three figures are likely generic Colonials they bear a striking resemblance to Washington, Jefferson and Hamilton. A stirring transfer providing a window into the roots of the fight for American independence. The lower quotation is reported to have been from a raucous dinner in New York given in honor of the Continental Congress, American Army and the late Gen. Richard Montgomery who had perished Dec. 1775 during the invasion of Quebec. Reports of 31 toasts concluding w/Washington reportedly saying "To 'Civil and religious liberty to all mankind'-mankind, that is, except Tories." Spiderweb crack, right side of memorial transfer, 5". Interior crack not affecting exterior, paint loss. Fine. Absolutely impressive by every metric. Rex & Patti Stark Collection.
