U.S. Government Bonds / She Does Not Ask. ca. 1917.
Halsted's 1916 design for "Columbia Calls" was donated to the U.S. War Department, and the New York Times printed 500,000 copies of it to raise money for a home for orphaned children of American soldiers and sailors. So popular was her image of Columbia that she employed the symbol again for this design and several other variations. Here, Columbia raises her torch above text that reads: "She does not ask for contributions / She asks you to invest your money at 4% in U.S. Government bonds." Another printing of this poster includes text at top for the Woman's Liberty Loan Committee; this Yonkers-based group eventually accrued $3.9 million in subscriptions.
