U.S. Grant Deputy Quarter Master General Appointment, Signed 6 Months Later
A Deputy Quarter Master General appointment signed by Ulysses S. Grant as president. 1p of vellum partially printed, measuring 15.75" x 19.25", Washington, D.C., dated July 2, 1872. Signed "U.S. Grant" as President and "Wm W. Belknap" as Secretary of War. A note at the right margin reads "(Rare) Actual date of signature by the President Jan 8, 1873." The document appoints "Tredwell Moore…Deputy Quarter Master General with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel…" With a blue paper seal at the upper left side. Docketing at the upper left corner. The document has stiff folds. The blue seal is starting to come away from the document. Grant's signature is slightly faded. Light toning and soiling on verso. Accompanied by a COA from H. E. Harris & Co.

Tredwell Moore (1825-1876) graduated as a Cadet from West Point in 1847 and was promoted to the Army as a Bvt. Second Lieutenant. He served in the War with Mexico as well as the Civil War. In 1865 he was promoted to Bvt. Major "for faithful and meritorious services during the Rebellion." He held several positions as Quartermaster, including at Nashville, Ft. Adams, and Fort Gibson. He died at Fort Gibson at the age of 51 just four years after receiving the above appointment.
