**U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Schuetzen Type Target Rifle

.30-06. 30" barrel length. SN: 1266212. Blued metal finish with polished bolt, half-length handguard, Schuetzen pattern butt and palm rest, and heavy barrel. Bolt action single shot target rifle mounting a Lyman No. 48C receiver sight and a Winchester globe aperture front sight. Item features a headless firing pin, and a hand-fitted Schnabel forend attached to the original forend with cutout for the triggerguard and fingers. The receiver is marked U.S./SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/MODEL 1903, and mounts block sight bases for Winchester and Lyman telescopic sights. The rifle displays features typical of the Model 1930 Heavy Barrel Target versions of the Springfield rifle. Aluminum Swiss-style buttplate is secured with five screws, and the forend extension is attached through the magazine cutout, rendering the rifle single shot. Stock shows front and rear reinforcing bolts with pointed panes to either side of the wrist. Semi-pistol grip cap is secured with a brass washer and bolt.

Rifles of this pattern were produced by Springfield Armory and were available both to military rifle teams in the United States, and could be sold through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. As competition firearms, they were subject to extensive modification, including conversions to single-shot rifles featuring a palm rest and Schuetzen type stock, such as this example.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
Arms, Armor & Militaria Very Good. Bore is Very Bright with sharp rifling throughout. Blued metal finish is thinning on the barrel bands and receiver with some light scratches on the barrel and a mottled gray to brown patina forming on the polished bolt. Wood furniture shows some light indentations and mars overall, along with some scuffs and chips to the seam of the semi-pistol grip.
