‘U.S.A. BONDS’ PROPAGANDA POSTER
‘U.S.A. BONDS' PROPAGANDA POSTER
American World War I propaganda poster, 20 x 30 in., titled ‘U.S.A. Bonds', with the subtitle ‘Third Liberty Loan Campaign Boy Scouts of America'. This gold-bordered poster features an extraordinary image of a kneeling boy scout gripping a sword, engraved ‘BE PREPARED', which he offers to a male personification of America that holds a large shield bearing the Great Seal of the U.S. The two figures rest atop a concrete slab bearing the words: ‘WEAPONS FOR LIBERTY'. The printed signature of the artist ‘J.C. Leyendecker' is at the bottom right, with the printing line ‘American Lithographic Co., N.Y.' at the bottom margin. Regrettable tears at the margins, though, the imagery is well-detailed and remains quite vivid.
