UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE (JAPAN, 1797–58) WOODBLOCK PRINTS, INK AND COLOR ON MULBERRY (KOZO) PAPER, 1840-42, H 6.25", W 8.75", KYOKA TOKAIDO (THE FIFTY THREE STATIONS OF THE TOKAIDO ROAD) Containing 55 of the 56 prints in this suite, each with a kyoka or comic poem above the landscape and signed Hiroshige ga, the majority with kiwame and publisher's mark of Sanoya Kihei (Kikakudo). Horizontal chuban. Angell was the daughter of William Bristol McHugh (Ruth), Captain of the United States Navy and veteran of WWI, WWII and Korea, who was stationed in Tokyo after WWII. She moved to Tokyo with her parents after graduating Stanford in 1946 and studied painting under Tsuguharu Foujita. Condition Report: each with pale time staining, scattered pinholes and thin spots (inherent to age and paper), some nicks or minor areas of paper loss along the extreme sheet edges, colors fresh, block numbers attached on a small piece of paper verso. Prints have been maintained out of sunlight and in an excellent state of preservation by Mrs. Angell and her heirs since her return from Japan.
