Ugo Zaccagnini, Toscany, Italy, porcelain double plate with golden winged female figure in the middle [Nika, the goddess of victory?]; cameo profiles of the Roman emperor and empress in the early 1800s Empire style. Such free 'Modern' reinterpretation of the Roman classic, Empire and Renaissance styles is a hallmark of Ugo Zaccagnini work during the 1920s-1930s. The porcelain mark "Z" intersected by a hill-like curve was introduced in 1928, after the Ugo Zaccagnini e Figli Company relocated to the factory building on Via Monte Oliveto, Florence. The second generation designer, Ugo's son Urbano also used this mark until c.1950s-60s.

Ugo Zaccagnini (1868-1937) Italian sculptor and ceramist, the founder of the Zaccagnini Porcelain Company. After his death, the company was led by his sons. The production ceased in the 1960s, the company was officially discontinued in 2000.

Born in Pistoia, the ceramist Ugo Zaccagnini studied at the Scuola di Disegno Industriale in Sesto Fiorentino. Until 1891, he worked as a sculptor and modeller in the Richard-Ginori ceramics factory in Sesto Fiorentino. Later, he worked for several years as a freelancer. In 1896, he started a business with Egisto Fantechi, Luigi Ceccherini, Augusto Fantini, Francesco Grassi, Paolo Banchelli, and Giuseppe Conti. The business was called S.I.F.M.A. and was located in Florence.

In 1905, he opened his own factory under the name "Ugo Zaccagnini e Figli" with headquarters in Florence, producing ceramics in the traditional and the Liberty style. In the years that followed his five children joined the company.

After Ugo's death in 1937, the style was changed. The second-generation period is marked by the creation of rustic terracotta pieces with three-dimensional winding cord designs. With the help of entrepreneur Aristide Loria, Urbano Zaccagnini reformed the company into Ceramiche Zaccagnini S.p.A. Newly headquartered in Piazza Pier Vettori, the company modernized its production technology and capacity, growing to include 120 employees, and began exporting its products to the United States. With Urbano as artistic direction, Ceramiche Zaccagnini S.p.A. collaborated on designs with new artists, including Mario Bandini, Ottorino Palloni, Maurizio Tempestini, Gino Pozzi, renowned ceramist Leopold Anzengruber, majolica painter U. Ciardella, sculptor L. Contini, and Fosco Martini, known for his ceramic animal designs. In 1938, Walt Disney consigned the production of its ceramic cartoon characters to Zaccagnini S.p.A., ensuring that the Zaccagnini name become well known in the US. The company also made colored majolica vases, table lamps and settings, made special commissions for the Mussolini family, and was exhibited in the 1940 Triennale di Milano.
