Ulysses Grant Bold Signature From Adopted Hometown Following Post-Presidency 28-Month-Long World Tour
Signature

A signature clip belonging to former 18th U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), signed and inscribed by him as: "U.S. Grant / Galena, Ill. / Nov. 24th 1879." On off-white paper laid down on a slightly thicker mount, with cropped upper corners. Minor rippling to the paper surface caused by the adhesive, with an isolated area of discoloration affecting the "9" of the date. Mounting traces verso. Else very good. 5.375" x 3". Accompanied by a fine engraving of Grant likely excised from a book. The general is shown in his Civil War uniform seated in an interior with lancet windows. Uneven toning, and isolated stains/discoloration mostly around the edges. Discreetly pencil-inscribed by a collector at lower right recto. Else very good. 6.75" x 10.125". From The Doug Wertman Collection.

In May 1877, shortly after finishing his second term at the White House, Grant and his family had embarked on a lengthy and ambitious world tour. The Hayes administration considered the Grants' trip through Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India, China, and Japan as an unofficial diplomatic mission. During their travels, Grant met foreign dignitaries ranging from the Pope to , chancellors, queens, tsars, and emperors. The ex-president's party returned to the United States over two years later, landing in San Francisco in September 1879. They then journeyed eastward towards their adoptive hometown of Galena, Illinois, arriving there in early November 1879. The Grants had first moved to Galena in Spring 1860 so that Ulysses could work as a travel agent and clerk at his father's leather goods concern, Grant & Perkins. At the conclusion of the Civil War, Galena's inhabitants presented their now-famous Union General with a handsome brick house on Bouthillier Street (now the U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site).

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
