Uncommon Handkerchief Map of DC, "A Map of the District of Columbia and the Surrounding Country"

This lovely pictorial handkerchief map was published for the National Capital Park and Planning Commission, which was established by Congress in 1924 and is now known as the National Capital Planning Commission. The map shows DC and the surrounding area, noting important landmarks, roads, and railroads, with a numbered key that identifies the most important locations, such as Georgetown, Alexandria, and several universities. An abbreviated quote by architect Daniel Burnham surrounds the map: "Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood... Make big plans; aim high in hope and work... Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty." The border features views of iconic buildings, including the White House, the Capitol, the Washington Monument, Mt. Vernon, the Lincoln Memorial, the Supreme Court, and others. An eagle medallion bearing 13 stars fills the four corners. Created by Mildred G. Burrage, an American artist whose works are now held at the Smithsonian Institution. Copyrighted by the American Civic Association Inc., which was established in DC in 1910 to improve living conditions in America through urban planning and development.

Overall very clean and bright with a few small, faint stains and a small area of fraying along the right edge. There are small pin holes in the corners of the handkerchief.
