Unicum is an Austro-Hungarian liqueur with a very long history. Its first taster is said to have been Emperor Joseph II of Habsburg, for whom it was created by his court physician Zwack in 1790. Originally, it was therefore a medicinal spirit, valued for its ability to combat digestive ailments; however, even today Hungarians claim it is a “cure-all” and recommend drinking a glass after a meal to aid digestion.
