Large and rare ‘top’ or buccaneer’s flintlock rifle - late 18th or early 19th century: Total length: 172 cm Barrel length: 130 cm Calibre: 15 mm So-called ‘top’ rifle, the top being the platform atop the masts of ships. This type of very long and precise rifle was used by buccaneers, trappers and other ‘coureurs des bois’. This rifle was used from the ship’s top to fire at the enemy during a collision. Admiral Nelson was killed at Trafalgar by a bullet fired from the top of the great mast of the Redoutable. Lock and hammer with round bodies. Lock marked LONDON. Left bolt marked with different British hallmarks and the number 22. All the trims are made of brass. Wooden rod with pear-shaped head. Light walnut wood. Mechanism in perfect condition, complete and functional without any play, very firm springs. Smooth, round barrel, faceted at the bolt, inside in very good condition.
