United Kingdom - P1796 - Light Cavalry - Sword

[ translate ]

Although maker mark on the spine is unreadable it is British saber as it was examined and stamped by controller of the British Board of Ordnance (No. 4 under crown stamped on the blade) . Numbers under letter "J" indicate that this saber was in the service of the Dutch Army (possibly Chasseurs a Cheval - Light Dragoons) . This saber was most likely part of major order placed by Dutch government in 1811 and delivered in 1813. These sabers were stored in Arsenal of Brielle. On 31 July 1881, some 900 cavalry swords were transferred from the Arsenal in Brielle to the Rijksmuseum. Eventually this sword was sold at auction in June 2020. Thanks to careful maintenance and conservation in armory and then in Rijksmuseum this saber is in unusually good condition for over 200 year old weapon. - weight w/o scabbard: 933g - weight with scabbard: 1955g
