TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'United States and additions, 1820'
The title of the map notes that it includes US territorial development to 1820, although the names given do not recognise all the states which had been admitted to the Union by that year. Marked on the map are "Illinois Territory" (admitted as the 21st state in 1818), "North West Territory", "District of Maine" (admitted as the 23rd state in 1820) , "Alabama Territory" (22nd state in 1819), "Michigan Territory" (admitted later as the 26th state in 1837). West of the Mississippi, "Aransas District", adjacent to the Arkansaw River - the first known use of the modern spelling of Arkansas was used in 1820. The districts of Cape Girardeau, Howard, St Louis and Lawrence are marked. The Devallieres Grant is marked above the White River with nearby Osage settlements in Western Arkansas on what would later become the Oklahoma Border. a number of native American Indian settlements are marked.
