Unknown (19th century): Striking weavers in a bar in Ghent, 19th century, Wood engraving

Technique: Wood engraving on Paper

Inscription: At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "La nouvelle Grève des Tisserands a Gand.".

Date: 19th century

Description: View into a bar, where a group of women seem to be talking in the foreground, while men are engrossed in conversation in the middle ground. Their habitus and clothing partly reveal them to be workers; the title of the illustration from "Le Globe Illustre" describes them as weavers. In addition, he situates the scene in the second half of the 19th century. In 1839 there had been a first weavers' revolt in Ghent, and in the 1860s there was another strike. Two children try to draw attention to themselves at the bar, but the pub owner takes no notice of them.
