Unknown Artist - Tekel/Tekely (?) - Hungary (?) - 20th century, 1944 - Rural Landscape, Oil on Panel
A horizontal painting depicting a vast rural landscape. In the foreground, a sandy, winding road is visible, leading deeper into the composition. Fields in shades of gold and ochre stretch out on either side of it. In the center of the composition are small rural structures: a house with light-colored walls and a dark, steep roof, as well as haystacks with soft, rounded shapes.
The background consists of a wide horizon with a low building line and delicately outlined architectural forms. A bright, slightly cloudy sky, rendered in cool shades of blue and gray, stretches over the entire scene. The brushwork is loose, with visible brushstrokes and soft modeling of forms. The painting is framed in a simple, profiled wooden frame with a warm, golden-brown finish. Signature at the bottom (partially worn away): "Blok […] Velem?, Tekkel? Tekely 1944".
Oil on fiberboard.
Condition as shown in the photos.
Dimensions: 50 x 31 cm,
Frame: 60.5 x 41.5 cm.
The painting is part of the realist and post-impressionist landscape movement popular in Polish painting, which developed particularly intensively in the first half of the 20th century. The motif of the countryside, fields, and simple buildings was a significant element of the artistic iconography of that period, reflecting an interest in the native landscape and traditional way of life.
The handling of light and the synthetic treatment of forms indicate a familiarity with the painterly trends characteristic of the artistic circles of interwar Poland. Although the work remains unsigned, its stylistic characteristics allow it to be placed within the circle of artists associated with the genre landscape movement, where emphasis was placed on mood, light, and the chromatic harmony of the composition.
