Oil on card, framed behind glass. Handwritten inscription to the lower corner batten of the frame's reverse, not securely legible. Bust-length portrait of a young woman against a dark ground, the head frontal, the gaze towards the viewer; dark hair; dark clothing. Abrasion to the paint layer in two areas along the lower edge of the image, approx. 1.5 cm and approx. 1 cm. Isolated lightened areas to the centre of the image, left half. The varnish uneven under ultraviolet light. The paint surface only partly assessable through the glazing. The mitres of the frame open at three accessible corners. Losses to the gilding and ground at the edges and to the flat. Abrasion of the gilding with exposed red bole to the ridges of the outer moulding. Visible dimensions 37 x 31 cm; framed 64 x 58.2 cm
