Unusually Large Egyptian Bronze Situla

Ancient Egypt, Ptolemaic period, ca. 304 to 30 BCE. An oversized bronze situla of hammered bronze in sack form, small dimple at base. Attached to the rolled rim are two integral suspension loops, to which a handle has been fitted. In Egypt, the situla form was made for holding and carrying holy liquids during religious rituals; the form was used for other purposes in classical Greece. Some have been found that were later used to hold ashes, or were buried with offerings in tombs. Size: 3" W x 10" H (7.6 cm x 25.4 cm); 10.75" H (27.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private prominent D.K. collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 2000s
