Utagawa Kunisada (Sandai Toyokuni) Woodblock Pair
Framed pair of 19th century woodblocks by Utagawa Kunisada, also referred to as Sandai Utagawa Toyokuni (Third Generation Toyokuni of the Utagawa School). Likely from the early 1850s, these woodblocks show two men sparring in wrestling, and a group of Kabuki actors in a fight scene.
Kunisada was the best selling woodblock artist of all time in Japan, and the most prolific. In period, his work was more sought after than that of Hokusai and Hiroshige in Japan.
The paper the prints are on shows signs of ageing with some fading, and some holes and tears on the edges. Prints come in a double frame with some scuffing.
