[ translate ]

St. John the Baptist Basilica in Warsaw, interwar period. The composition depicts a section of the cityscape dominated by the church’s slender, vertically articulated structure. The church’s façade is depicted centrally, featuring a tall tower flanked by smaller architectural elements topped with decorative pinnacles. The facade is rendered in warm shades of ochre and yellow, accented by the red of the roofs and delicate touches of blue and green in the background.
On the left is a fragment of the adjacent buildings with an arcaded passageway; on the right are more buildings of a simplified form. The perspective is captured slightly from below, which emphasizes the monumentality of the depicted architecture. The painting style is free-flowing, with soft, blended patches of color and subtle contour lines. The work is mounted in a simple, warm-toned wooden frame and signed in the lower right corner.
Wood, watercolor, paper,
Dimensions: 18 x 12.5 cm
Frame: 23.5 x 18 cm
Condition as shown in the photos.
The work is similar to depictions of the cathedral by A. Korczak or Władysław Chmieliński.
