Born into an aristocratic Sicilian family in 1898, Fulco di Verdura infused his jewellery designs with artistic flair and a love for vibrant colours. He favoured bold gemstones and rich yellow gold, resulting in pieces that exuded a captivating blend of joie de vivre and glamour, attracting a discerning clientele who appreciated his unique aesthetic.
In a twist of fate, a chance encounter with Coco Chanel in the bustling city of Venice in 1926 changed the course of Fulco di Verdura's life. This serendipitous meeting led him to her Parisian fashion house, where his artistic spirit would blossom and his journey as a designer would begin.
Starting with textiles, he soon transitioned to jewellery design, where his creativity flourished as he reimagined Chanel's personal collection and went on to craft iconic pieces for the house, such as the Maltese cross bangle in 1930, a signature element of his work.
Drawing inspiration from the eight-pointed Star of the Knights of Malta, Verdura's Maltese cross bangle exemplifies his unique style with its bold colours and vibrant gemstones.
