VESTAL FAMILY, WASHINGTON CO., VALLEY OF VIRGINIA STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, approximately one-gallon capacity, tall cylindrical form with flat-top rim and pronounced collar. Inscribed "N Vestel" (sic), possibly Neal Henry Vestal (1838-1927). Attributed to Vestal family pottery, Osceola region, Washington Co., VA. Circa 1880. 10 5/8" H, 4 1/2" D rim.
Chip to underside with hairline and two minor flakes to base, otherwise undamaged.
Provenance: Property from the estate collection of Dan and Doris Chrisman, Roanoke, VA.
Catalogue Note: Neal Vestal's brothers were potters Simon (d. 1885) and Jessee Vestal (1828-1904), one likely the maker of this jar.
