VICTORIAN ERA HORSEMAN'S AXE.

[ translate ]

Circa Victorian Era horseman's axe that is modeled after a 16th century horseman's axe. These axes were formidable on the battlefield and were very effective at piercing armor. The axe features a short curved crescent shaped blade at the front which is balanced with spike, often referred to as a pick, at the back. The axe also features a belt hook, which measures approximately 5" in length. Completing the axe is a wood haft that measures approximately 32 - 1/2" long. The haft is secured to the axe by two iron languettes with two nails in each side. The axe appears to be hand forged, as there is evidence of delamination on the reverse of the belt hook, around the head, and cutting edge. The head is crudely fixed to the haft and was possible married together. CONDITION: The axe head, belt hook, and languettes exhibit a pleasing dark gray patina with pitting throughout. There appear to be vice marks on either side of the head just above the haft. Belt hook wobbles slightly. The haft exhibits heavy handling wear with various scratches and dents. Overall good. JLD Blade Length: 6" Overall Length: 36"
