VIRGIN AND CHILD, Antwerp School, 16th Century
Antwerp School, 16th Century
oil on panel
10 5/8 by 8 7/8 in.; 27.5 by 22 cm.
Provenance:
This composition faithfully follows a popular design by Joos van Cleve which, given its small size, must have been originally intended for private devotion. The tender figural grouping ultimately derives from a Virgin and Child by Robert Campin (Frankfurt, Städel Museum).1
1. M.J. Friedlander, Early Netherlandish Paintings, vol. II, Rogier van der Weyden and the Master of Flemalle, New York 1967 ed., p. 71, cat. no. 60, plate 89.
