Even though it was created for military uses and ended up, in considerable numbers, on the Mexican market, which was crying out for a more robust vehicle than the Beetle, the Volkswagen Type 181 became a very popular leisure-time car. Its superiority can be appreciated just by taking in its reassuring appearance and generous proportions. Furthermore, it is powered by a grumbling but unstoppable, air-cooled 1.6-liter boxer engine that takes it effortlessly where other cars beg into gasp. This car is at its best when it is being used for trips to the country, away from paved roads, or to the sea where it can be used as a sort of family land-tender. Indeed, it can be parked in the sun, and exposed to sand and wet costumes without coming to any harm. The car offered for sale has always lived in Italy, where it was first registered in 1973. It has had four owners since 1989, unsurprisingly all from Tuscany or Liguria. It last changed hands in 2009. Used very little in recent years, it needs some work doing before it can safely be used again.
