Description

Hans Eriksson's Volvo-Ambulance PV 445 with Grip body

This unique ambulance was built on an extended Volvo delivery chassis of the 1957 model year. The car was built by several skilled craftsmen in Västervik at Grantorpets Fabriks AB (Grip-kaross). Grip-kaross in Västervik was started in 1937 with artisanal production of truck cabs. The bodies were designed by the company's own designers Karl Möller and Bengt Karlsson. According to various data, including from Rune Schepp — who helped build the car body in the late 1950s — only 3 of this model were produced. The other two have not been found and are probably scrapped. The car was delivered to the large Kopparberg Bergslagen Blötbergets mine in Grängesberg where it operated as a medical transport van from 1958—1977. It had gone about 400 miles under those years according to the driver Tore Söderholm.

After the time as a Mining Ambulance, stretchers, lights and other equipment were removed and the car was used for other activities within the Blötberget mine. The car was owned by SSAB Gruvor until 1989. The car was then to be scrapped but was bought by Bo Agne Karlsson in Kopparberg who in turn sold it to Peter Schönaur in 1994. The idea was to use it as a mobile home but it was left in a barn outside Trosa. In October 1998 it was bought by Hans Eriksson (metre gauge 4,946 mil). Hans started a thorough renovation with the help of his son Johan who did the sheet metal work and his wife Elisabeth, who among other things sewed a new ceiling. The renovation took 6 years and over 1,000 man-hours.
