Vu Cao Dam studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in Hanoi from 1926-31 under the tutelage of Victor Tardieu. He then continued his studies in France, where he would live for the rest of his life. He stayed in Paris until 1949, at which time he moved to the south of France for his health. He exhibited at Frost & Reed Galleries in the early 1960s, the period from when this work dates. He is best known for his depictions of women and his light color palette, both themes evident in the present lot.
