Painted landscapes, seascapes, still-lifes, city landscapes, especially with water and reflection of city in it. Thin master of tonal painting. Created impressive, pastose, silvery grey compositions in the oil techniques, added by bright colorful accents.
Valdis Kalnroze was born on January 17, 1894 in Kuldiga.
Studied in studio of Ansis Stunda. In 1927 entered at the Latvian Academy of Art, in 1932 finished the Workshop of Landscape Painting under direction of V.Purvitis.
He was a member of "Zala varna"(Green the Raven), took part in all its exhibitions. Since 1944 he was a member of Latvian SSR Artists Union, in 1952 excluded, restored in 1957.
In at exhibitions participated since 1928. Personal exhibitions are organized in Riga (1933 and 1934, together with K.Padegs, 1942, 1964, 1970, 1975, 1979). A memorable exhibition in Ogre (1994).
