Valdivian Pottery Standing Venus Figure

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivian culture, ca. 3500 BCE. A hand-built pottery female figure known as a 'Venus' figure standing upon thick thighs. Her simplified body boasts slender arms draped atop her abdomen, perky breasts, wide hips, and sloping shoulders that taper to a thick neck. Her abstract countenance is defined by slit-form eyes and eye brows, an impressed mouth, and a rounded chin, all beneath a puffy coiffure accentuated with several lightly incised striations. Smooth red slip embellishes the lower body, and her head exhibits no additional pigmentation above the chin. Size: 0.875" W x 2" H (2.2 cm x 5.1 cm); 2.75" H (7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Condition Report: Loss to original legs as shown. Head reattached to body, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Small chips to body and head, with fading to areas of red pigmentation, and light encrustations within recessed areas. Light earthen deposits throughout, and nice craquelure to original red pigment.
