Chalcographic cover page, depicting Galen (Galenus) and Hippocrates, under the authority of Aesculapius, underwritten: Nicolaus Perrey fecit. Woodcut drop caps, head- and tailpieces, finely historiated. Latin text on two columns. First Neapolitan edition, uncommon, of this work dedicated by the translator, Pietro Antonio Rea, to the Neapolitan philosopher and doctor Iacobo Cesarano. The original work, written by Valles de Covarrubias, was published in 1577 in Madrid. Francisco Valles de Covarrubias (1524-1592) , a Spaniard, was the greatest exponent of Renaissance medicine, a defender of Hippocratic medicine and considered the founder of modern pathology.
