[ translate ]

Artist: Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995)
Title: Valley of Fire (edition: 23/100)
Date: 1967
Size: 61 x 45. 2 cm
Condition: Signed by artist, discoloured along the edge due to previous mounting, minor creases around the edge.

Toshi Yoshida was an extremely renowned artist in the sosaku-hanga movement of modern printmaking. His close relationship with his father Hiroshi Yoshida was instrumental in the pursuit of his art and produced many woodblock prints portraying natural scenes while developing his niche with exotic animals.

After the death of his father in 1950, Toshi experimented for a while in abstract art. He began working on a series of abstract woodcuts, influenced by his brother Hodaka Yoshida, also an artist. These experimental prints draw from expressionism and pop art with bold colour palettes. The respect for his father had kept Toshi away from trying it earlier, but after a few years he returned to his original realistic style.
