Q. Horatii Flacci Emblemata: Imaginibus in aes incisis, Notisque illustrata

Antuerpiae - 1607 -
Former Hieronymi Verdussen Workshop

214 p. ill.
In 4th - 27 X 20. 5 cm.

SPLENDID EXAMPLE, IN FIRST MULTILINGUAL EDITION, OF VAN VEEN'S QUINTI HORATII FLACCI EMBLEMATA (1556/1629) ,
Dutch painter, draftsman, humanist and teacher of Peter Paul Rubens.

CONTAINS 104 WONDERFUL FULL-PAGE EMBLEMS.

The work constituted a significant development in the design and conceptualization of emblem books, as well as in optimizing their educational impact.

By transposing the works of the Roman poet Horace into innovative images, through prints of high technical quality, the work can be used for philosophical and moral meditation.

In the first year of publication (1607) two separate editions were printed.
The first contained only fragments of text by Horace and other ancient authors, mainly in Latin (especially Horace) , with an allegorical engraving on the front, while in the second, present here and rarer, also published in Antwerp by Verdussen,
the Latin texts were accompanied by Dutch and French quatrains, and the collection of texts and images began to resemble more traditional emblems.

The work is the product of the collaboration of many artists, engravers (C. Boel, C. Galle, P. de Jode) , typographers, classical scholars and Van Veen.
The full-page illustrations are of the highest quality and positioned on the recto of each page opening, with letterpress printing opposite each illustration on the reverse.
The Fifth Horatii Flacci Emblemata had
widespread during the 17th and 18th centuries and were copied and pirated in France, Spain, Italy and England.
The book was also used for the education of a future king of France, as well as a pictorial source book for interior decoration.

Beautiful period binding in full leather, with double dry-engraved purfling framing the plates and rich golden floral decorations on the spine.
with red morocco tag bearing gilt title.
There is an abrasion at the upper end of the back, in correspondence with the front hinge, and a small fragment of skin missing at the lower end, in correspondence with the cap.
However, very solid and sturdy binding.

Very well preserved interior, including the
104 beautiful full-page engravings.
First multilingual edition, very rare, with texts in Latin, Dutch and French.
Contains title page, frontispiece with portrait of Horace and ancient manuscript exlibris
C. L. Therouenne 1645, as well as 2 + 3 original gazebos, with decorated first gazebos and pastels.
Interesting ancient annotations in Greek
(see photo) .
Original red silk bookmark.
Very slight traces of marginal dirt.
Cuts sprayed in stain originally.

Excellent copy, complete and original in every part.

The general conservation is very good
of the work.
