Van Winkle, Printers Guide Art of Printing, lmtd. Ed.

"The Printer's Guide; or, An Introduction to The Art of Printing; Including An Essay on Punctuation, and Remarks on Orthography", by C.S. Van Winkle, Printed and Published by C.S. Van Winkle, Printer to the University of New York, 1818; Facsimile reproduction done by R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company for Sun Chemical Corporation in 1970, stated Limited Edition.

Listed in Bigmore & Wyman III,42; Shaw & Shoemaker 46630 - noting three locations; Wing Catalogue, Supplement I, p.578 . The first printer's manual to be published and written in the United States and, as Lawrence Wroth states, "an honest, unpretentious, and exceedingly creditable summary of knowledge and practice." Although an earlier printer's manual was printed in Boston in 1817, that manual was essentially an abridged version of the manual published by Caleb Stower in 1808 with little added whereas this manual also used Stower but has much information added including a section on punctuation, descriptions of the Columbian Press of Clymer and Ruthven's press and some description of the Ramage Press.

Van Winkle also includes a section on printing prices and piecework wages paid to New York compositors, ink and printers' supplies, and the two type specimen sections showing the work of New York founders.
