CONTENTS
A Book of Hours is a liturgical manual that contains the prayers and readings for the different hours of the day. These books were very popular in Europe between the 14th and 16th centuries, especially among aristocratic women.
A Book of Hours typically includes:
Calendar: indicates the religious holidays and saints commemorated on each day of the year.
Hours of the Madonna: a series of prayers dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Penitential Psalms: Seven psalms that express repentance for sins.
Gospels: passages taken from the four Gospels.
Litany of the Saints: invocations to the saints to ask for their intercession.
Suffrages: prayers for the deceased.
Books of Hours are often richly decorated with miniatures, decorated borders and ornate initials. These ornaments are not only beautiful to look at, but also have religious and symbolic meaning. Books of Hours are therefore considered works of art of great value.
Many Books of Hours are preserved in libraries and museums around the world. Some libraries offer the possibility of consulting their Books of Hours online.
