No reserve price Chinese vase made of white and blue porcelain (qinghua) with phoenixes (fenghuang) ; Chinese manufacture, presumably Jingdezhen manufacture (Jiangxi province) ; late Qing period (1796-1911) , first half 19th century Height: 57 cm The vase features a cobalt blue decoration under a coating of light blue, a technique sometimes found in the 19th century. The pair of facing birds consists of the mythical phoenix (fenghuang) , associated with other lucky elements. The fenghuang is a legendary bird of Chinese mythology, having features similar as, but not identical to, the Greek and Egyptian phoenix. The males were feng and the females, huang. Today this distinction is no longer made, and feng and huang are united into a single female entity, often coupled with the male dragon. Fenghuang is sometimes called the August Rooster, as it can take the place of the rooster in the Chinese zodiac. In western countries the bird is also called the Chinese phoenix.
