Vase designed by U. Valdimarsson, Nový Bor, Czech Republic, 2004
A very intriguing piece. This vase was created in 2004 as a commission for the President of Iceland. It was designed by multidisciplinary artist Ulfar Valdimarsson and crafted by metalworkers in Nowy Bór, the result of a collaboration spanning many months.
The project’s title is “Icelandic Whale” or “Elephant of the North”; originally, the object was meant to resemble a whale thanks to a metal tail that was supposed to be located at the base of the piece, however, this element is missing from the piece shown above, and all indications suggest it was never there in the first place, as the vase is in perfect condition. There are no signs of breakage or damage whatsoever.
Vases from this series were numbered and signed by the artist; according to all available data, up to 1,000 pieces were produced.
In light of the above, I conclude that the piece in question is one of the factory trial pieces—an unfinished work, without a number or signature. However, it has no manufacturing defects and is a beautiful object in its own right.
