Venetian School, late 19th Century- The Lovers; oil on canvas, 99.5 x 74.5 cm., (unframed). Note: The artist here is clearly looking back to the Venetian Renaissance, to works by artists such as Palma il Vecchio (c.1480-1528) and Paris Bordone (1500-1571). The subject is of venal love - note the man reaching into his pocket for money - and is one which was commonly adopted by artists working in 16th-Century Venice.
