After a fresco by Paolo Caliari, known as "il Veronese", in the Stanza dell'amore coniugale, Villa Barbaro, in Maser (Treviso). Exhibited in the Stuttgart State Gallery in 1958/59, the string tercet was still attributed to Veronese before Rodolfo Pallucchini suggested a Venetian painter of the 17th century, namely Pietro Liberi (1605-1687). Liberi studied under Alessandro Varotari ("il Padovanino"), also from Padua, and was thus a descendant of the great Venetian painting tradition of the Cinquecento.

The painting was once in the collection of Jakob Goldschmidt (1882-1955), Berlin and New York and was sold at Hugo Helbing, Frankfurt/Main, auction 23 June 1936 (art property of a Berlin collector), lot 89 (as: Paolo Veronese). A fair and just solution in accordance with the Washington Principles has been agreed with the heirs of Jakob Goldschmidt and will be signed before the auction.
