Veracruz Pottery Coast Watcher Figure

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz), ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A hand-built male pottery "coast watcher" figure seated with crossed legs. The hands rest to either side of the knees and he appears nude, except for an applied necklace, ear spools, and an ornate headdress. His visage appears to be entranced, with narrow eyes, and a slightly open mouth; perhaps representing a shaman having visions. Traces of orange slip are painted around the torso and neck. This is a fine example of traditional artistry from ancient Mexico! Size: 3" W x 5" H (7.6 cm x 12.7 cm)

The term "coast watcher" was originally designated to figures like this example, as their appearance suggests they would sit and wait along the coastline to scout for possible invaders. Although the term is one originating in modern times, archaeologists believe that these figures probably represented individuals as indicated by personalized ear plugs, necklaces, and facial expressions. Some historians have indicated that these figures may not have been "coast watchers" at all, but rather shamanic individuals who perhaps drew their powers from the roiling current of the ocean.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-T. Ziesseniss collection, Pennsylvania, USA, acquired 1990 to 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
