VERBRUGGE, Jean Charles "La haie sainte" and "Mont St Jean". Ca. 1815-1831 2 drawings on one large folio, 22 x 32 cm, laid paper, signed at lower right "J. C. Verbrugge". Views of important walled farmhouses that played an important role during the Battle of Waterloo. La Haye Sainte was defended by about 400 German and British troops during the Battle of Waterloo. They were hopelessly outnumbered by attacking French troops but held out until the late afternoon when they retired because their ammunition had run out. Mont-Saint-Jean is on the reverse slope of the escarpment where the Battle of Waterloo was fought, and is the name Napoleon Bonaparte gave to the battle (la bataille de Mont-Saint-Jean). After the battle, Mont-Saint-Jean Farm served as field hospital. Verbrugge was a Bruges pupil of Garemijn.
